Expert Adolescent Therapy with Matt Bishop

It’s a tough time to be a teenager.

The scientific research on the teenage years speaks for itself.

With all its changing social norms, increased technology, political polarization, and complex challenges, modern society has impacted the teenage experience.

All the classic stressors exist, like fitting in socially, the pressure to succeed academically, navigating romantic feelings and dating relationships, and all the family dynamics that are unique to each individual.

But screen time, Snapchat, gaming, and the rest seem to have strapped a rocket ship on the back of anxiety and depression rates. It’s a tough time to be a teenager, which means it’s tough to be a parent.

I love working with teens.

I remember how impactful it was for me to feel like there was an adult unrelated to me but who was on my side for the first time. Having an adult listen to me, validate how I felt, and truly understand me greatly impacted my life.

I like working with teenagers because, in the therapy room, I can help them drown out all the noise created by modern culture, find themselves, and determine who they want to be.

How we’ll do it…

Our work together will include grounding exercises that can help when feeling anxious. We work on self-care plans when feeling depressed. Throughout our work together, I stress the importance of being compassionate toward ourselves, giving ourselves a break, being strong and resilient, and pressing through hard things to discover our capabilities.

I believe that everyone has a ‘higher self’ that wants to emerge and challenges that hold us back. This description is never so evident as in what we see with teenagers, and I delight in being a mentor, guide, and voice of wisdom that helps facilitate that emergence.
